EN LA SALA

En la Sala is a two part installation highlighting a traditional-turned-contemporary Mexican bingo game, ‘La Lotería’, set up in a home living-room style environment where the game is likely to be played. Along with the game is family archives, writings, and new photographs reflecting on my family history and lineage between the state of Texas and Mexico.

Yáñez is the eldest and only daughter in her immediate family which forced her into certain expectations within her Latino, fairly traditional household. She pairs old archives from her maternal side with her own image making and writings to navigate her mental struggles and make sense of her family history and upbringing. These fragments are combined with religious relics and decorations to discern the impact religion has on ones’ upbringing and the stigma around mental illness.
