LA LOTERÍA
The Loteria was invented by Clemente Jacques—also known as Don Clemente. Historically, ‘La Lotería’ was played by the Spanish and Mexican elite during the 18th century. Throughout the following centuries La Lotería transcended class and geography, and is now a traditional game that people of other Hispanic countries and classes enjoy. My goal in reinventing ‘La Lotería’ is to illustrate a more inclusive and contemporary vision of Latine people in the 21st century. When Latine viewers have the opportunity to play my version of the game, I want them to see themselves accurately represented. My version has people of different colors, sexualities, body types, and genders. I have also updated the cards with contemporary meanings of certain cards through photography, image appropriation and digital collage.
